At a time when nonprofit organizations nationwide have seen
declines in donations almost across the board, the
McMinnville Rotary Club’s “Uncorked: The Oregon Wine and
Art Auction” seems a notable and encouraging exception.

Held for the third and final year at Ken Wright Cellars in
Carlton, the event is the club’s major fundraising activity. It
supports the Willamette Valley Cancer Foundation, Virginia
Garcia Memorial Health Center and Rotary scholarship
program.

Launched 17 years ago under the leadership of Realtor Gene
Zinda, the event has rotated among several Yamhill Valley
wineries over the years, including Archery Summit, Anne
Amie and Adelsheim.

The complementary combination of fine wine and original art
proved to be a winning concept from the outset. With each
passing year, the event has grown in attendance and revenue.

According to chair Lee Vasquez, the 17th annual edition
brought in about $225,000. That’s some $14,000 more than the
previous high, set last year.

“Sponsors really came through for us,” he said. “We went
from $44,000 in sponsorships for 2008 to $58,000 this year. It
was wonderful to see how the community supported us the
way it did.”

Leading the way were presenting sponsor DND Electrical,
diamond patron Genentech and platinum patrons Meisel Rock
Products, Kizer Excavating and the Willamette Valley Medical
Center.

Vasquez, a retired Yamhill County sheriff, credited his wife,
Erma, with doing most of the work. “She makes me look
good,” he said.

The Vasquezes are stepping down from their leadership roles
as the event moves to a new venue following three very
successful years with Ken and Karen Wright serving as hosts.
Next year, the event will feature new teams all around.

Uncorked 2010 will be held at Methven Family Vineyards.
Owners Allen and Jill Methven just completed a new winery
last year in the midst of a 32-acre estate vineyard on the
eastern slopes of the Eola Hills between Dayton and
Hopewell.  -- Karl Klooster
